This castle is often referred to as the Cochem Castle. It sits alone on a hill surrounded by vineyards, over looking the city of Cochem and Mosel river below. This castle, to me, looks exactly how I would picture a castle to look. Even the inside has such a presence that I feel transformed back to the years it represents.
As far as castles go, this one is one of the top ones I have been to. The views offered from the castle grounds and from inside the castle itself is just spectacular. The atmosphere that is radiating from this place is contagious. Because it is surrounded my vineyards, how can you not want a glass of wine after your tour?
This castle does offer a medieval dinner. Its a great family experience. They also offer "ghost" tours for the kids. During these special events your able to tour rooms that aren't available to see during the normal tour. Another unique attraction that this castle has to offer is the falconry. During specific times, they offer shows to demonstrate these amazing bird's skills.
One of my favorite things about this castle is that it allows you to take photos of the inside. I am not a great photographer, but I love being able to show people my own pictures of a place. A tip I have for the places that don't allow you to take pictures: In the gift shop they usually sell post cards. Most of the time you can find that they sell a pack of post cards that have a picture of the hot spots of the tour. I always buy one. The pictures are usually better than the ones I can sneak in a tour.
The city also holds a medieval festival on the castle grounds. Its a great experience. It is also a great time to take a tour of the castle. They give you a discounted priced and it is the only time they offer tours in English.
